Proportional notation

I would like to use a strictly proportional notation (noteheads only) in combination with graphics. It seems that the layouting options are still in development. The option "proportional notation" seems to be difficult to realize.

  • Proportional notation can be achieved pretty nicely by using 64th notes throughout a measure. Make the notes stemless and change the ones between visible noteheads into invisible rests.

  • Having to keep track of the correct number of rests when you enter music manually could be cumbersome. But one could write a Max program that takes one's music and transforms it into the correct number of 64th notes and rests. There is a plug-in system called Scorepions which allows the creation of a Max patch that at the press of a button would
    - adjust the tempo
    - transform the music into 64th notes and rests
    - unbeam all notes
    - hide stems and rests
    - add a time grid
  • How is this going to deal with the situation where simultaneous parts are moving at different tempi, and multiple subdivisions are being used?
  • In MaxScore, parts cannot move at different tempi and measures need to line up. One could in principle create a scenario in which multiple instances of MaxScore objects render to the same canvas, but this is currently not high on our priority list. Besides, there is already software out there that's capable of that. bach on the other hand lacks the ability to render to different contexts and to represent notation in multiple ways.
